Developed by the Tourism for Rural Poverty Alleviation Program (TRPAP) under the UNDP fund, the Tamang Heritage Trail is a newly developed trekking destination which was developed to distribute equal tourism opportunities among the poor rural communities living in the Rasuwa region. The region has the feel of little Tibet and trekkers who have gone there claim it is like trekking in Langtang 20 years ago. Since its development, the revenue and other income generated by the tourism activities in this region contributed directly to the local communities supporting the local livelihood, women’s empowerment, and environmental conservations.
[Tamang Heritage Trail – Langtang- Gosaikunda Trekking-01] The trek initially starts from Kathmandu from where a 132km stretch of road leads us to Syabru Bensi by either local bus or private car. From Syafru Bensi the route passes through Syafrubesi, Goljung, Gatlang, Chilime, Tatopani, Briddim whilst ending back again in Syafru Bensi or Langtang, Gosaikunda treks if you prefers. YOUTUBE.
Among others, the opportunity to stay and explore the village of Gatlang remains one of the most fascinating highlights of this trip. With its unusual setting, exotic costumes, Tamang cultural shows, traditional handicraft, religious festivals, intriguing architect, Gatlang is sure to leave the visitors mesmerized. The viewpoint at Goljung (Danda) provides the opportunity to gaze beyond the Tibetan frontier with amazing mountain views that include the Sangen Himal, Paldor Peak, Langtang Lirung and the Lauribinayek range. As we head further we also have the opportunity to relax in a soothing natural hot spring, known as “Tatopani”, we're taking a bath even just for once is believed to cure many skin problems. From here we head to Nagthali Hill (3300m) followed by Thuman where we will explore century old monasteries and traditional houses adorned with rich wood carvings
In Gatlang and Briddim it is possible to stay at peoples homes. Travelers stay with the host families, eat traditional food and sleep in their home. The menu usually consists of rice, Tibetan bread, syakpa (Sherpa stew), potato and Tibetan tea. Visitors can also observe the local rituals and cultural practices with the host family and go on village walks to see the lifestyle and customs of the local residents.
The houses in these two Tibetan style villages are made of stone and slate roofs. The villages are living museums reflecting the traditional Tamang culture and lifestyle.
Most of our employees have been brought up along the Tamang Heritage Trail and we are proud to say that we are among the only experts in this area. We arrange the Tamang Heritage Trail all year round. July and August might proof to be rainy but the green of the rice fields at that time is unbeatable. It is possible to add on or cut out days, so the trek suits both your schedule and desires. Langtang trekking (front page, next to picture)
The mountains north of Kathmandu offer a great range of trekking choices, all within a day’s drive of the capital. The major areas are the Langtang Valley, the sacred alpine lakes of Gosainkund, the rolling Sherpa farmland of Helambu, the Tamang heritage area, and all of these can be combined in many different ways to make a trek lasting from 7 days to several weeks. The Langtang area sees far fewer tourists than both the Annapurna and Everest region, however, it is equal in beauty and you’ll get to experience the “real” Nepal.
The Langtang Valley trek follows the river upstream through forests of pine, bamboo, and rhododendron, ascending through pastures to arrive at the alpine meadows of Kyanjin Gompa, where you’ll get outstanding mountain views just a stone’s throw from the Tibetan border.
The Gosainkund trek climbs more steeply through farmland and above the tree line up an alpine ridge that offers a huge Himalayan panorama, to reach a rocky bowl studded with sacred high-altitude lakes.
Our recommendation is to undertake the Tamang Heritage trek, which is a relatively new trek where you get to experience the unique culture of the Tamang people combined with outstanding views and a bath in the hot springs of Tatopani.
Even though listed separately it is possible to link all of the three treks to one making it a lovely 2-week journey.
All trailheads are accessible by bus or private transport from Kathmandu. Hiking times and overnight stops are planned for a moderate hiking pace, and proper acclimatization to altitude.
We, the founders of Himalayan Unforgettable Adventures were born in the Langtang region. In addition, many of our guides come from the area.
